The Sparkwood Hereford Herd
Founded in 1995 with three polled Herefords from the late Mary
Briggs’ Blackwell herd and subsequently introducing first a horned bull,
Badlingham Brockenhurst, and then a few Badlingham cows, the herd has evolved
and now has about twenty cows and around sixty head in total.
Purchases from Bob and Margaret Borwick’s renowned Mara herd have also
positively influenced the Sparkwood herd’s development. We are very
fortunate to still have Bob as a mentor and his extensive knowledge and experience of
Herefords has proved invaluable.
Notable herd sires following Badlingham Brockenhurst have also included: Mara Victor, Badlingham Baronet, Mara Emerald and latterly Mara Excel.
Current herd sire is Mara Kilamanjaro, a well balanced powerhouse of a bull - not too long and not too tall, nice and deep with a good back end - all qualities expected from his Mara breeding.
Three females were purchased from the Gomer Herd dispersal sale and latterly Boycefield Louisa 16th joined us and now has a very smart heifer calf by Corlismore General 700 at foot. These should all fit well with our breeding policy.
